The Kingdom by the Sea

by Robert Westall

Mammoth, 1992 (first published 1990), 175 pages, ISBN 0 7497 0796 8

How easy was it to get stuck into this book?
This book is a compelling read, even though there isn't something new happening on every page.

Who are the main characters?
The main character is Harry, a bombed-out survivor of the Second World War. Harry meets a lot of strange characters, including an army colonel, a strange fisherman and an old man. There is also Don, the Alsation, who becomes Harry's faithful friend.

What's the storyline?
Harry thinks his family is all dead and sets off for Lindisfarne, an island the old man had told him about. When he eventually returns to his home town, he discovers that his family are still alive. What should have been a happy ending doesn't happen.

How's it written?
Sometimes it is quite nice to read things that are a bit more thoughtful. This book isn't a difficult read. The descriptions are quite good.

Other books by the same author that Tim knows about?
Blitzcat and a lot, lot more

The overall verdict is
A cool-read

Quick Pick
- 08 September 2010 -

This is a collection of Viking myths, retold by Kevin Crossley Holland, about battles between Gods and monsters, the creation of the world, bargains and revenge. It's an anthology I suppose, and as in a lot of anthologies there were some stories I found more gripping than others. I preferred ones which were less predictable, there were some which were predictable enough to bore me. A lot of them feature Loki which is good as he is one of the more interesting Gods and I felt he was even tricking me at times. I would have liked to see more of Odin though…
