Hover Car Racer

by Matthew Reilly

Macmillan, 2004, 434 pages, ISBN 1405050632

How easy was it to get stuck into this book?
Hover Car Racer follows young brothers Jason and 'Bug' as they are plunged into the fast and dangerous world of hover car racing, in a futuristic world where almost all vehicles are levitated four feet off the ground. As you might expect, there's loads of action, but sometimes the descriptions of the race can be a bit similar.

Who are the main characters?
The main character is young Jason Chaser, a hover car racer who alongside his brother Bug begins the book driving the pair's cobbled together car, nicknamed the Argonaut, in the hope of succeeding past the regional championships. Other important characters in the book are the pair's chief mechanic Sally McDuff; the shady Prince Xavier who seems perfect at racing; Ariel Piper, a female racer who is the first to do so ever and Scott Syracuse, a former race track driver who has now turned coach and is tutoring Jason and his brother.

What's the storyline?
The story basically follows Jason as he progresses to the prestigious race school on Tasmania, and begins to learn the art of hover car racing. However, he soon discovers that it is not only skill which counts but that the racing world is rife with corruption, treachery, gambling and sabotage, and a good driver has to avoid these as well.

Quick Pick
- 10 September 2010 -

Jake Pembroke (12) found The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray really easy to get stuck into. It's a world where foul creatures lurk round every corner and bloodthirsty criminals stalk the night and the Fraternity (who practice a dark form of witchcraft) are ever present. The book follows Thaniel Fox, a teenage wych hunter, Cathaline , his former tutor, Alaizabel, a neglected child who was part of one of the Fraternity's rituals, and loads of horrible creatures. This book is written to terrify, to disgust and to excite its readers, keep them full of anticipation and Jake thinks it achieves this brilliantly.
